Why We Eat When We're Not Even Hungry

What do you do with that time if you don’t eat?

I remember a client telling me that at 2:00 P.M., he always needed to eat. He knew he was not hungry; he had just eaten lunch!
So, I asked him, “If eating didn’t exist in that moment, what would you do?”

He looked at me and he said, “I am a CEO of my company, yet when you ask me that question, I feel like I am sitting in a corner with no answer”!
I said, “Exactly! When you have used eating instead of your own thoughts and actions, your creative mind has become hazed. And, unfortunately, now you need the eating to clear the haze (or so you believe) so you can move on with your life.” Hence, the 2:00 P.M. eating.

So, I ask you again, “If eating didn’t exist in that moment, what would you do? Start thinking of things you could possibly do at that time.”
My client started listing actions. At first, he said it felt like quicksand in his mind but eventually the haze disappeared, and he began to think of many actions.

So, the next time 2:00 P.M. came around, he picked up that list and began to do something else.

And, trust me, you will need that concrete list of actions to replace the eating. It helps to get your creative mind through the haze. You will discover that you will need to delete some items and add others, depending on which actions worked to help you not eat.
The next time you want to eat, yet you know you are not hungry, try it! You may learn how strongly that desire has reinforced itself through the years. But how exciting to start using your own thoughts and actions instead of detouring to eating!
